QUIEST Seminar: Christino Tamon (Clarkson University): “Breaking No-Go Theorems in Quantum Walks”

Abstract:

A continuous-time quantum walk on a graph is given by the unitary matrix exp(-itA) where A is the adjacency matrix of the graph. This defines a Schrodinger evolution with A as the Hamiltonian. In quantum computing, quantum walk is important for designing fast quantum algorithms (such as Grover search) and useful quantum protocols (such as entanglement generation). It is also known that quantum walk is universal for quantum computation.

In this talk, we explore some results in quantum walks which can be viewed as No-Go theorems. These include monogamy of quantum state transfer, impossibility of uniform mixing, and Anderson localization in quantum spin chains. We then describe methods to circumvent these No-Go restrictions. These have applications for quantum transport and state preparation in quantum information.

 

Biography:

Christino Tamon received a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, prior to joining Clarkson University in 1996. He has held visiting positions at Institut Henri Poincaré (Paris), Centre de Recherches Mathématiques (Montréal), and Harvey Mudd College. His research interest is approximately in theoretical computer science, and had been supported by the National Science Foundation, National Security Agency, and Air Force Research Laboratory.
